Geoff was born in 1964 in North Yorkshire and learnt the
piano from an early age. After being made to practice under duress the
young chap rebelled slightly and gave up for a period. A little later,
realising that perhaps the key to eternal happiness lay within the black
and white beastie and its treasure trove of magical phrases, Geoff
returned to lessons with a new sense of purpose.
The music of the time in the early eighties and in the
peer listening circle was certainly dominated by heavier forms. However
Geoff soon began to attach himself to the more creative elements within
those bands. Colin Towns of the Ian Gillan band was a particular influence
(and has gone on to become a most prolific film and TV composer). In a
hunger for more creative music forms, Geoff discovered his older brother's
record collection brimming with the likes of Genesis, Tull and BJH. This
he decided was the holy grail. After recovering from the shock that his
parents had actually born him about 14 years too late (to miss all those
classic line-ups and gigs), the need to explore the piano further became
great....
University beckoned and off Geoff went to be sensible and
get a decent degree. Whilst at the University of Hull, Geoff met fellow
musicians Stuart Martin and Manir Khalil, the threesome becoming
Coltsfoot. This line up recorded a number of cassette EPs which, looking
back were probably rather naive (one even had a pixie encamped on a
standing stone at Stonehenge on the cover!), but introduced the band to
writing, recording and consuming vats of intavenous coffee in dark
studios.
Most of these early recordings have long been banished to
dusty drawers and safe deposit boxes but the band continued to record
sporadically over the 80's/90s and a selection of old and new recordings
was finally compiled to form the conceptual CD - A Winter Harvest in 1995.
The recordings actually spanned 10 years but amazingly hung together well
as a conceptual piece loosely based on the cycle of life, death and
rebirth. Coltsfoot continue to record and their latest work is currently
in progress.
Geoff started writing for radio and television in 1996,
particularly for science producers Keith Halden and Louise Dalziel
at BBC Scotland. This has provided Geoff with the perfect opportunity to
combine his primary interests of music and science. Having a physics
background hopefully gives an edge of understanding to the subject matter
that comes through in the music composition.
Much of Geoff's musical output is based around the use of
piano although equally he likes to experiment with the plethora of colours
available from synthesisers and samples. His sound is essentially English,
influenced by his classical beginnings and later influences such as Colin
Towns, Anthony Phillips and Steve Hackett. Much of his writing is
influenced by the English countryside and its wonderful flora and fauna.
He has a number of projects in development at present, these include a
number of piano albums, a new Coltsfoot album and further work in radio
and television.
Geoff has a degree in applied physics, a petrol driven
lawn mower and a PhD in non-linear optics. He lives in Gloucestershire on
the edge of the Cotswolds with his wife Karina and four little chaps Tom,
Liam, Jack and baby Rowan.
Geoff is available for commissions in any musical area
and can be contacted via the contact page.
